Another Overused Word: Epic

I like the word “Epic.” I like epics. That is to say, I like long stories which chronicle the adventures of legendary heroes. I also like collections of user stories, which is another way of saying that I have un-diagnosed mental illness.

Too many people use the word epic to mean “really cool.” Just say that you think it’s cool. I guess this isn’t so bad.

What really does annoy me though, is how the word is used on YouTube for people who make fan videos of things that they like. They often try to create an “epic version” of something. Which primarily involves recycling a musical composition they don’t have the rights to through a synthesizer and making it have very loud sounding instruments, as if that makes the soundtrack they like bigger and therefore better. When all that does is just make it sound boring, because the actual soundtrack in the movie was recorded with a full orchestra, while the synthesizer just sounds bland and flat.

I guess it’s the audible version of adding a spoiler to the back of your Honda Civic and telling people you have a race car. It reveals the male (it’s always a male) as delusional for thinking it makes his car go faster, and also lacking in taste. Actually, no, the problem with the Honda Civic is trying too hard at having a racecar. It’s more like taking the Chrysler 300 and trying to pretend it’s a Bentley by putting aftermarket Bentley badge on it.

I don’t even give a shit about music or cars!
